iPhone as a phone – probing the main function

Attention. If you are an Apple fan, stop right here, don’t read any further. Take care about your nerves. You are not a fan, that’s for sure?! Don’t tell us nobody warned you after you read this. This article has been written for normal people, rather than those coming from Homo iPhonus species. To that group we relegate the consumers who alter themselves, as well as their physical parameters, so as to make use of the iPhone.

Following the canons of trenched warfare, Apple fans have already prepared a fallback to their fortified positions. Occasionally they mumble that it is merely a “fancy toy” that can’t be judged on its technical merits. Personally, I have no quarrel with this definition, for it is a precise way to describe what this device actually is.
Wrapping it all up, all these claims of the iPhone fans on SMS-messages give an interesting picture. I’m curious about what their song will be when the phone arrives in Europe. Ah, right, I almost forgot – it will turn into a spaceship. I suppose there is nothing more to talk about. What is typical of fans, they always shift gears, so their moans have already traveled from the field of solid facts to philosophy. But enough of this gas, moving straight to the substance.

Short summary
While in the messaging department we made sure that the iPhone has almost nothing to it, the phone features are doing better – it rings, which is a good thing already. The ergonomics of the phonebook, dialing display and, basically, everything that has something to do with calls have been carried over from the past century. Any iPhone user spends twice as much time on dialing a number – if you call at least 15 times a day, it will make 6 to 9 hours a year. Of course it may not seem much at a glance, but in the end it all leads to tremendous amounts of wasted time.
The sound quality is pretty moderate in view of no sound enhancement systems. The absence of voice dialing capabilities on a handset (it is also a touchscreen-centric device, mind it) hyped this much looks odd, the say the least. Had Nokia released a phone lacking voice dialing, it would have been trampled at once.
The iPhone doesn’t have any profiles or call settings either. Moreover, the handset produces such mediocre volume level, that you have to wear headphones all the time – three meters away from the phone and you already can’t hear it ring. On the bright side, Apple has finally done away with disabled ringtones. But they still need to add a coffee grinder to the phone, so that all i-stronauts can have a cup of coffee whenever they want. Remember, this phone is turning into a spaceship soon, just keep this in mind.
Also, the iPhone doesn’t stand a chance in the enterprise segment – it simply doesn’t have the goods this type of users demand. No remote synchronization, no advanced features in the phonebook, no support for enterprise data bases.
It is a pity that in terms of its phone part, the “revolutionary” iPhone belongs to the 20th century. It is not particularly good at making calls, doesn’t offer its user great usability, or some all-round new abilities. Being a weak solution, both in software and hardware departments, it comes with a host of gizmos, you know, those cute-looking ones. I think Homo iPhonus need only these visual touches. But then again, there is no point in shouting about this phone’s overwhelming advantages over other models available on the market. Once you take an iPhone in hands, you are bound to spend a lot of time with it – that’s the company’s ultimate goal, which was reached by omitting ergonomically friendly interface. For the time being, the thing Apple really needs is walking ads, rather than a solid user base.
P.S. In the next installment we will focus on the iPhone’s “stellar” email, which is the third most popular application in this handset. And while the iPhone is still the talk of the town, Apple has made a handful of noticeable moves. First, they have rolled out recovered iPhones for the US market with a 100-dollar price cut – it seems that over the two months since the release date, Apple has accumulated a large stock of returned devices. Then, to boost the sales they have dumped the 4 Gb version, and have taken 200 USD off the 8 Gb version’s price tag. And last but not least – even before the European release of the iPhone, Apple’s sales haven’t lived up to expectations, and yet the market “surprisingly” finds out a relatively painless method of unlocking the phone. This will allow the company to prop the iPhone sales in this quarter.

Production faults in cell phones – cause and effect

100 percent of all manufactured handsets have some kind of problems when start shipping. There is no such thing as a defect-free product. There are only phones with minimum number of flaws, which are not critical for the end-user.

What breaks down in cell phones?

It would seem that when a phone breaks down – that’s it, period, nothing to ponder over. But let’s settle down for a minute and get some clarity about the definitions, and then move onto the causes of breakdowns. On the basic level there can be two types of breakdowns – critical and non-critical. By “critical” we mean all types of damage that leads to full or partial inoperativeness of the device. In other words, you won’t be able to handle it, or using it will be a real challenge, for example when the display has been rendered useless, but the handset still rings.

For a common user, this division will be pretty much sufficient, for all “non-critical” issues, like paint that peels off, make the handset look lackluster, rather than hurt its main functionality. That is why it is not a rare occasion when users don’t call at service centers with non-critical defects.
For instance, those casings with peeling-off paint, as the general opinion puts it, are the cases uncovered by the warranty, so the users attribute them to the way they treat their units. However, for the most part, these devices are subject to warranty repair, and the maker has to fix them and bear all the expenses.

Nevertheless, service centers can’t accept this categorization based on whether your handset works or lies breathless – they apply different classification. All problems with phones are divided up into three large sections:

Mechanical. Everything related to spring mechanisms of clamshells and sliders, crude keypads, casings or internal components, whose replacement doesn’t require soldering (damaged display, for example).

Electrical. Hardware-related malfunctions - resistors, capacitors, chipsets and so on. As a rule require soldering to fix.

Software. As the name clearly puts it, all kinds of software problems fall under this category. These may include user functions (subpar menu localization, or malfunctioning alarm clock), or improper implementation or some connectivity options, resulting in abysmal call quality or rapidly discharging battery.

It would be to wrong to believe that production costs for handset manufacturers are absolute, and the companies are willing to sacrifice quality for this. By no means. Any manufacturer always evaluates the risk of breakdowns and subsequent warranty expenses. However, no manufacturer is ready to create his solutions in a way to make them outlive the warranty period, for this inevitably results in increased product price, while not giving any substantial edge over the competition. The strategy of “durable phones” is doomed, since it reduces the target audience and boosts products’ life time. Neither manufacturers nor carriers are interested in this outcome.

What can consumers do?

Willingly or not, the manufacturers set the pace of our lives, prescribe the life span of mobile phones, which ranges from 1 to 2 years. Some models actually remain good as new even after several years, whereas some start falling apart in a few months’ time. In some cases of utterly careless treatment (like scratches left by keys etc), it is, to say the least, unwise to insist on getting the phone repaired – no service center will take on this job. But if you do treat your device with due care, warranty repair is possible and should be demanded in any event.

So, the only way to avoid such nuisances when you have nothing left to do but take your new phone to a service center after a few days of use, is study all sources of information available to you before rushing into a shop, as well as find out what first adopters think of their new gadgets. Unfortunately, that’s all you can do today.

Would you like to know if your mobile is original or not?!!

Review of GSM/UMTS-smartphone Nokia N95. Music

Nokia N95 is indisputably the most hyped novelty of this season and sets off to be its segment’s one of the most popular offerings. That is why we are now stepping aside from our usual review structure and instead taking a closer look at the major constituents of the handset, and today we are kicking off with the music department.

Music department. It may be safely said that Nokia N95 is among the music-minded smartphones by Nokia, even though the manufacturer itself does not deliberately spotlight that, preferring to push all features of the device. The package the N95 comes in indicates that this solution will cater for music lovers as well as everybody else.
The left-hand side houses a 3,5 mm audio jack, used for plugging in custom earphones, i.e. those you have grown fond of. The bundled headphones simply radiate style, with the armored cable in transparent braiding. There is a plastic clip on the wire, so that you can always shorten the cord by hooking the cable with it. The headphones that come boxed with the N95 are not in the running for the best-sounding earphones around, being inferior both to those coming with Nokia 3250 and Nokia N91. If you want to make the most of this device, you should better have custom headphones plugged in.

The remote control comes packaged with the phone and bears strong resemblance to that of Nokia N91 – with its help you can manage playback by rewinding, pausing, playing tracks and also answer a call with the dedicated button. The sides are loaded with volume rocker and Hold slider respectively. As someone would say, it lives up to what we have come to expect from the company, and on top of all that, the front fascia of the remote is made of metal. Clipping the remote on your clothes was never an issue.

should emphasize it again, that the handset’s big attraction is the 3,5 mm audio jack placed on the casing and on the remote, which enables you to go for either of the jacks. However, when plugging headphones into the shell-mounted socket, the N95 fails to identify them automatically, asking you what gadget you have just connected and offering the following options: TV-Out cable, headphones or Music Stand. Although since you have to select only once, this is not annoying.

List of supported formats: AAC, AAC+, eAAC, eAAC+, MP3, MP4, M4A, WMA, Mobile XMF, SP-MIDI, AMR (NB-AMR), MIDI Tones (poly 64), RealAudio 7,8,10, True tones (WB-AMR), WAV. MP3-files with various bit rates, including VBR, are seamlessly played back by the N95. On synchronization with Windows Media Player 11 and higher, you can take advantage of protected DRM-files (Janus DRM).
Player interface found in the N95 sports run-of-the-mill design, but still we feel like dwelling upon it a little more. First, it boasts full-fledged support for Album Arts, thumbnails of images shown on the display are quite large; then you can turn on one of the two visual effects, though if that’s the case, the N95 will initiate the visualization you’ve picked in full-screen mode. It makes no sense at all, though, and more importantly constantly working backlighting knocks the battery life down
Track title and artist are displayed, as well as player controls. Progressive fast-forward is enabled. Generally speaking, music playback may be managed via the remote control, dedicated player keys and the navigation pad – you are free to choose any way you like and that’s just great. You don’t like the remote, then put hands on dedicated controls and so on.

Equalizers. As equalizer settings are modified, the sonic experience varies considerably. Every of the 6 pre-installed equalizers features 8 bands and is fully user-manageable, saving for the default settings. The list of presets is as follows - Bass Booster, Classical, Jazz, Pop, Rock. In the Sound Settings you can adjust balance, Stereo Widening and Loudness.

Memory cards accepted by the N95 are microSD, some package variations include 1 Gb memory card by default (only for selected markets). At present the biggest card you can get in the market carries 2 Gb onboard and easily gets along with the N95. As more capacious units are arriving in the market, the handset won’t have any problems with handling them either.
Synchronization with PC. Music can be gotten onto the device by the means of Bluetooth, which, as a rule, is not convenient, WiFi, which can be hard to get in every given place. So the second best way to upload music is copying tracks onto the memory card via card-reader, as miniUSB-powered data transfer (the socket is mounted on the casing) is the easiest way to keep the N95 up on the state of your music library. In the latter case you can pick one of the four modes:

Data Transfer (Mass Storage USB) – both the handset’s memory and the memory card are visible, no drives are required, and your operating system automatically recognizes the phone. Data transfer speed tops out at 950 Kb/s (USB 2.0).
PC Suite – used for working with Nokia PC Suite, allows access to all functions of the handsets, as well as data backup and so on;
Image Print – self-explanatory item;
Media Player (MTP protocol) – synchronizes data with Windows Media Player

Everything is straightforward here, in settings you can enable pop up windows asking you which connection type you’d like to use every time or just set one mode as the default option. A stand-alone application is Nokia’s very own application allowing you to synchronize you music library with the handset, I experienced no hardships with running it.
Sonic experience. Probably the most subjective and hardest aspect to rate. Everyone has his own vision of the world, thus it is inevitable that some find even excessively loud music very tuneful, whereas the others seek average volume and adequate reproduction of all frequencies. So as not to sway towards subjective assessments, we carried out instrumental measurements, yet the result will be presented to our readers a bit later. And for now we are facing off Nokia N95 against other smartphones by the company - Nokia 3250, Nokia N80, Nokia N91, in all cases we used one and the same headset plugged in the default remote or adapter (for the N80).
The sonic experience delivered by Nokia N95 loses to that of Nokia N91 and loses by a mile. They don’t even stay close to each other – Nokia N91 outputs much sweeter sounding. Subjectively, Nokia N95 seems somewhat better than Nokia 3250, Nokia N80, but the difference is quite subtle. The volume level is good, especially when used with custom headphones. All in all, the N95 provides average sonic experience for Nokia’s solutions, but how the things stand when it is put head to head with stand-alone mp3 players? We picked Sony Walkman NW-S203F for the test, which is not the company’s best offerings, being a typical middling solution at all points.
Then we uploaded the same albums onto both gadgets and started playback (identical headphones, for Nokia N95 plugged in the shell-mounted jack). And the first thing we came across was the volume level, which was 20-25 percent higher on the player., even though it has quite sub-standard maximum volume settings.
It turns out that a stand-alone music player puts up higher volume and better sonic experience, keeping the sound similarly penetrating on all volume settings. At the same time at full blast Nokia N95 gave us metallic tones, being unable to cope with the overload.

Playback time. At maximum volume settings and random playback with default headphones and remote control used, the handset lasted for about 8,5 hours. In real life situations, 2-3 hours of music playback won’t have any significant impact on the N95’s battery life, which still gives us 1 day of operation.

Bluetooth.
The smartphone retains EDR-enabled Bluetooth 2.0. The handset supports the following profiles:
A2DP
AVCRP
BIP-ImagePush;
DUN-GW;
FT-Server;
HandsFree-AG (1.0);
Headset-AG;
OBEX;
OPP-Client;
OPP-Server;
SIM Access-Server.

Visual Radio – online radio that allows not only listening to music, but also viewing corresponding images and lyrics on the phone’s display.
FM radio – this application sports standard interface, with the ability to save up to 20 stations. When tested in city, the radio worked in its usual way.
Stereo-speakers
The handset houses two stereo-speakers placed on either side of the casing. The volume they put up is slightly above average, but in terms of sound quality they are far behind Nokia 6233, and don’t sound too loud, being a tad quieter than those on Nokia N73. Even though you may give it a go and use the phone as a pocketable juke box, it won’t make much sense, as with volume turned full blast you will surely notice sound distortions.

camera
Whereas in the first installment of the review our only focus was the music department, now we are examining the handset’s imaging capabilities, thankfully there is a credible reason for that, for the N95 is one of the first popular phone sporting a 5 Mpix camera unit onboard. The LG’s offering, as well as others akin to it, are not the options due to poor prevalence. As a matter of fact, we could even say that Nokia N95 shows the way the forthcoming handsets will look – over at Nokia they call it a convergent device, although we would rather call it a cross.

Specifications of the camera are as follows:
Maximum resolution: 2592 x 1944
Matrix: CMOS 5.0 Megapixels
Focal length 5.6 mmF-Stop/Aperture f/2.8
Focus range: 10 cm ~ infinity
Optics: Carl ZeissAuto focus

Resolution. Maximum resolution available with the N95 is Print 5M – Large, which stands for 2592x1944 pixels, in this resolution a snap takes up from 700 Kb to 2 Mb; also the user is enabled to pick one of the following resolutions:
Print 3M – Medium (2048x1536 pixels)
Print 2 M- Medium (1600x1200 pixels)
E-mail 0.8 M – Med. (1024x768 pixels)
MMS 0.3 M – Small (640x480 pixels)

Video
The handset is capable of shooting video in a number of quality modes, with the best one putting up 30 frames per second at 640x480 (VGA resolution). But you always can reduce the FPS rate to 15 or get the resolution lower. All clips are captured in MPEG4, at that you can record sound simultaneously. The default storage place for video clips is the memory card, though you can easily switch it to the handset’s own memory. Any clip can’t run longer than 60 minutes, but in truth before the battery goes down, you will be able to record from 40 to 50 minutes of video, as in video mode Nokia N95 is extremely power-hungry. While shooting you can take advantage of digital zoom (x8), and disable sound, in case you don’t need it.
Similarly to stills, here you can setup white balance, apply color effects, though the available scene modes form a list with two options – auto and night mode.
Now on to the video samples we took in maximum quality – they are good enough for a mobile device and as of today remain unrivaled. Quality sound recording is worse than that on Nokia N93, yet matches Nokia N93i.
Video sample 1 (mp4, 8.6 Mb)>>>
Video sample 2 (mp4, 3.8 Mb)>>>
Video sample 3 (mp4, 5.8 Mb)>>>
Video sample 4 (mp4, 6.9 Mb)>>>

Nokia N95 faced off against Walkman range by Sony Ericsson
When it comes to comparing products, then the market’s best solutions should serve as the benchmark, and as of today, Sony Ericsson branded offerings top the music market. It is important to understand that Nokia is a runner-up on the music front, but has managed to make a major leap up in a short time span. See for yourself:
Various ways of plugging in headphones – jacks on casings and remote controls. Though Sony Ericsson allows for connecting custom earphones only via the headset. In future more 3,5 jacks in Nokia’s products will make the things look much worse for Sony Ericsson.

It’s a draw when it comes to PC software - Windows Media Player is supported by both companies, as well as extra original applications for getting music onto phones.
Comparable number of equalizes and settings.
Album Arts and visualization support in both cases
Categorization by artists, genres, etc.
Support for miniUSB in Nokia N95, which is a big plus. Proprietary cables are not always handy, since not just about everybody owns one
A2DP implementation is a touch superior on Sony Ericsson’ offerings, more accessories work without any malfunctions
Bundled headphones are better in Sony Ericsson’s packages
Number of extra accessories is even, both companies offer Music Stand
Sonic experience – the centerpiece, where Sony Ericsson branded products are dominating. Regrettably, Nokia N95 puts up average sound quality, aimed at unsophisticated users.
On the face of it, Nokia N95 is handier as a music-minded device, proposing a tad more abilities (miniUSB, 3.5 mm jack). But on the other hand, such very vital detail as sonic experience, that outweighs all these draws, is not on Nokia N95’s side. So it turns out that creating a convergent solution the manufacturer has intentionally given up on enhancing the sound quality by leaving it on the platform’s default level, without getting it in line even with Nokia N91.

General impressions
Speaking of handsets, Nokia N95’s camera is getting a counterpart only in September with the release of the Sofia by Sony Ericsson. Similarly-sized casing packs a number of improvements upon the previous CyberShot solutions and a big focus on music (Walkman 3.0 and this won’t be a smartphone). The two products are separated by a huge time gap, thus even in future there won’t be much sense in putting them face to face due to different positioning, price and abilities. Sony Ericsson’s solution won’t be that expensive, though it is slotted only for now-too-far-off September. There is no surprise that the magic of 5 Mpix will force most portals to figure out which one is the best snap-taker, but as to me, this will be of almost no real use.
It is important to realize that much like Nokia 7650 in its time, this Nokia’s solution is only first of the kind. The second wave will sport a couple of offerings with 5 Mpix camera units onboard and some downgraded specifications. In a year’s time we will see the third wave comprising handsets with exactly the same modules as that found in Nokia N95. As of today, the camera built in Nokia N95 is the mass market’s best proposal (leaving out all exotic devices). Though there is no point in going for it just for the sake of its camera, as a digital compact will be a smarter choice. But if camera is one of the items on your lengthy wish list, then you definitely should read the next part of the review that should be released shortly.

Review of GSM/UMTS-handset Sony Ericsson K810i

Sony Ericsson K810i is designed after the K800i, being almost an exact replica of the latter, yet houses enough of “tiny” alterations, lending it a somewhat different feel. The first thing that grabs your eyes is the number pad, whose buttons are rounded with concentric texture. It does make you believe that it is nothing else but metal; up until now keys with such shapes were used only in Mobiado’s handsets, which are in fact tuned and revamped editions of Nokia’s commercial products.

The numeric buttons are easy to use, boast soft travel, so their form and spacing seem to be well-matched after all. Since the keys themselves could not possible have backlighting, the key padding, the front panel itself glows with blue. The front fascia is made of transparent plastic, unlike the K800i’s metal, underneath lays inky sub-layer. There is also another trim available, to be more specific, silver, but both look good.

The handset’s style, thanks to the plastic used, is closing in on what we see on the company’s now-current solutions, like Sony Ericsson Z610i, Sony Ericsson W610i. At that the plastic on the sides and the rear is still finished in soft-touch, yet inky as well as well (in our unit).
The functional keys above the display have grown in size and ease-of-use aspect, and what’s more there are now captions on the casing standing for what they do. The socket of the main speaker has been cut down and now lacks metal grill, which makes it less appealing in some respect, but again, it is all about Sony Ericsson K800i’s being made of metal, while the K810i is more staid, fashion-charged. It seemed to me that during a call the K810i was harder to line up with my ear properly, since the sound was sometime muffled due to a grill like that.

The plastic used on the front plate makes for easier-to-soil surface, as it readily picks up face grease and fingerprints. From the practicality standpoint, the K810i is obviously behind Sony Ericsson K800i.
While having the same functionality to the last bit, the revamped model has got one millimeter trimmed from the casing’s thickness, thanks to its different camera shutter, which is now recessed into the casing, thus opening it accidentally when carrying the K810i in pocket is next to impossible. In this regard the handset looks interesting. For the rest of its physical data, the phone weighs in at 115 grams, and shaves 2 millimeters off the predecessor’s length, which allows it to measure only 104x46x17 mm.

The display hasn’t undergone any updates, matching that of the previous model. Even though it is pretty crisp, the K810’s screen still can’t reach Motorola ROKR Z6 in this aspect, though is in line with solutions put up by other vendors like Samsung and Nokia. The display shows up to 262 K colors at 240x320 pixel resolution, which allows accommodating up to 8 text and 3 service lines for most applications; and when browsing web-pages, or handling e-mails or text messages, you can cram more lines into the display by decreasing the font size.

Flipping over to the phone's right side, the Infrared window can be found, as well as the volume rocker and dedicated camera key. Such layout, that has already become par for the course for most of the company’s offerings, is due to landscape orientation of the phone when working in camera mode.
Looking at the left-hand side reveals the music button, that can be set up to launch the radio, player or the last used application. Further down is Memory Stick M2 memory expansion slot.
The handset utilizes a 900 mAh Li-Pol battery (BST-33), that is starting to be a constant guest on all of Sony Ericsson’s latest proposals, including medium-priced ones. As the manufacturer claims, it can keep the handset up and running for 350 hours in standby, and provide up to 2,5 hours of talk time within UMTS networks, and up to 7,5 hours for GSM.

Phonebook. Up to 1000 contacts with fully filled in fields can be stored in the phonebook, but number of phone numbers is limited to 2500. This means that despite the ability to assign up to 5 phone numbers to one contact, you cannot go over 2500 entries. This is enough even for the most active users, as only few have more than 500 entries in their phonebooks.

Messaging. All tools used for managing messages are standard, there are some templates available and you can come up with some more of your own. Phone’s memory together with SIM-card is used for storing messages. Chat function is supported. On the whole everything is just like in any other phone from this company.

Connectivity. All connectivity settings for the phone can be setup from here, starting from WAP and GPRS (similarly to the K800i, EDGE is missing here,) to Bluetooth and Synchronization. I will not describe the standard options, they are kind of standard in the first place, and everything works fine. I’d like to highlight stable Bluetooth operation - no problems were encountered, synchronization with other devices runs smoothly, all profiles (including A2DP, which is stereo sound via Bluetooth) are supported. EDR-enabled Bluetooth version is 2.0.

Video player. The manufacturer has singled out the player in an individual menu item for the purpose of emphasizing how different it is compared to the music player, and other makers’ offerings, where video and music players share one section. On the plus side is ability to playback QVGA-clips at 30 frames per second, progressive fast-forward feature, landscape mode switcher, auto-scaling of high resolutions down to the display’s size. And the last, but of course not the least, highlight on the list is possibility to get snaps of frames of the played back video, which are saved as pictures and can be used in whatever way you like afterwards.

Radio. The K810i has memory capable of storing up to 20 FM radio stations and the auto-tuning ability, as well as RDS feature onboard. The Radio application used here is no different from that found on the K750i quality-wise, meaning that it is mostly fine. The handset comes boxed with a stereo-headset - HPM-70 (black).

Performance. The model puts up nothing special in terms of performance for the handsets of the company’s latest generation, yet it does better than most of other offerings available on the market. Low screen resolution compared to senior models, has a positive impact on the K810i’s performance – the interface works at the light-speed. There are no caps on JAR files, while HEAP can make up from 512 Kb to 1.5 Mb in size.

Applications. The handset comes with three extra applications – PhotoMate (picture editor – again), FaceWarp (wraps faces), HP Print.

Player. The phone has built-in mp3, AAC, 3GP and mpeg4 player (version 1). It is a good tool for listening to mp3 files. Besides settings you can setup equalizer (there are predefined settings: Bass, Voice, Tremble, etc), as well as the ability to create your custom settings. The sound changes according to the settings, this is noticeable.

Camera. The handset houses exactly the same 3.2 Mpix camera module as that found in the K790/K800, generally, they are totally identical, saving for a sole difference – Fix Photo mode that is now available in the K810i, allowing you to apply sharpness boost filter right after taking a snap. Basically, this is what any graphics editor can do – details get shaved off for the sake of a richer image

Impressions
Despite the polyphony having 72 chords in the K810i, the handset does not provide a breakthrough in sounding of mp3 tunes compared to other Sony Ericsson branded phones. Volume-wise, performing on average level on this front, the K810i is pretty much akin to Sony Ericsson K790/K800/W810. Be sure you will hear the handset outdoors. The silent alert provides average vibration strength. The reception part is in line with that of other products by the Sony Ericsson – in other words, it’s very fine.
If you come to realize that Sony Ericsson K810i has been launched not as a line-up extender or a replacement for the K800i, but rather as an addition to this model, then all pieces click into place. By the middle of march, when Sony Ericsson K810i is making its debut on the shelves, the original model will have become even more popular, though its design might get somewhat boring, and what is more the new edition is offered at a tad higher price . Thinking of the roaring demand for Sony Ericsson K790/K800, we have all the right to expect some good sales from the K810i as well, for it is a fetching solution that still has no competition in its class. Although, Nokia N73 may be counted for one to a certain extent, but at the end of the day, it is backed up with a wholly different philosophy.

Review of GSM-handset Sony Ericsson K550i

Sales package:

Handset
Battery BST-33
Charger
М2 memory card 64 Mb
CD with software
Wired stereo-headset

Sony Ericsson K550i was called to life due to the wild success of Sony Ericsson K750i that maintains its popularity even nowadays. On the announcement day many were already facing these two handsets off without any spoilers or hints coming from the manufacturer. I would say that these two solutions are utterly similar concept-wise. Up until summer of 2007 neither sales nor production of Sony Ericsson K750i will be stopped, but afterwards its spot in the line-up will be taken over by Sony Ericsson K550i with it’s a tad heftier price tag for a number of new features.

Generally speaking, model K550i packs photographic merits of the K750i, active lens cover, new memory expansion format M2, slim casing, compared to the predecessor, revamped design and also ability to run several third-party Java-applications simultaneously. As you see the changes log is quite lengthy and does justify release of a stand-alone model. In order not to return to that matter as we go deeper into the review, I should say it now that Sony Ericsson K550i is more feature-rich than the K750i in all respects – hence its higher price.
Sony Ericsson K550i has also a twin in the company’s range, specifically Sony Ericsson W610i.

The phone comes in two color solutions: Jet Black and Pearl White. This time both trims look appealing, and I would have a really hard time judging which one is the least attractive. Finished in white the K550i is a white Sony Ericsson W610i’s look-a-like, you might even end up confusing them having both phones in hands.

The K550i measures up at 102x46x14 mm, while the K750i offers 100x46x20.5 mm – be sure you will feel the difference, the newcomer fits in palm well and if you put them head-to-head in hands, then the K550i will definitely come out on top, simply because it is more convenient to manage. The phone weighs in at 95 grams and thus can be carried in any fashion you want, including around the neck, since there are holes for a strap.

The entire design of the rear face is modeled after a digital camera, which comes as no surprise, bearing in mind positioning of the K550i as a CyberShot handset. Compared to Sony Ericsson W610i, apart from the differences in the back cover clip design the K550i has a few more highlights to offer – the M2 memory expansion slot sits on the left side as well, yet is hidden under the battery cover, and you will have to detach it first to hot-swap the card. The uncovered interface socket Fast Port is mounted on the left-hand spine, and accompanied by a dedicated music key, which proves to be easy to work with.

The right plate houses volume rocker and camera shortcut button, and unlike the W610i the latter key is made of ribbed metal, it is bulkier and offers a whole lot more of convenience with its decent tactile feedback. In a nutshell – this is what physically sets positioning of these handsets apart. Completing the exterior is Infrared window on the right and the power button doubling as profile switcher.

Having a diagonal of 1.9 inches (31x40 mm) the K550i’s display shows up to 262 K colors (TFT). The first thing that catches your eyes at the first glance is how big the font size is – bulgy menu items captions is what makes the K550i look different compared to the more advanced models. Reading texts with this handset is a breeze, and the credit here goes to the display itself and its fonts. The screen can accommodate up to 6 text and 3 service lines. Unlike some other offerings, the K550i’s display doesn’t enjoy a protective layer that would guard it from sunlight, however in the sun picture remains visible, even though the colors appear washed out. Maybe they have applied a new finishing technology that makes for better visual experience.

K550i makes use of a 950 mAh Li-Pol battery (BST-33). The maker quotes the lifetime at 7 hours talk time and 350 hours standby time, plus up to 25 hours of music playback.
the handset lasted about 3 days at a bit more than one hour of calls, up to 30 minutes of web surfing and 1,5 hours of music playback a day. We also give its official playback time a go and set the K550i at full blast with default headphones and random playback, which resulted in 23 hours of real lifetime. Apparently, it is the best figure we have seen from a handset – the second best lifetime put up by other company’s proposal makes up 18 hours, while vast majority of cell phones keeps themselves up and running for 10-12 hours in this mode (like the first generation of Walkmans). It takes the K550i about two hours to charge from empty to full.

Camera.
The handset flaunts an auto-focus enabled 2 Mpix CMOS camera. The camera model has been adopted from Sony Ericsson K750i and won’t make anyone’s eyes go round with impression, as it is widely known as one of its type’s best units, the one that has raised the bar so high.
The device supports three possible resolutions - 1632x1224, 1280x960, 640x480 pixels. Two types of data compression, Normal and Fine, are at your disposal. The majority of the photos represented are in the Fine quality. The photos differ in size almost two times depending on the resolution. Thus a photo in the Normal mode takes about 300 KB when the Fine quality gives 500-600 KB. Saving the photo takes the same time not depending on the case, that is about 1-2 seconds, and that is quite well for such a file size.

Radio.
The K550i has memory capable of storing up to 20 FM radio stations and the auto-tuning ability, as well as RDS feature onboard. The Radio application used here is no different from that found on the K750i quality-wise, meaning that it is mostly fine.

Player.
The phone has built-in mp3 (AAC, eAAC+, WMA formats are also supported), 3GP and mpeg4 player. It is a good way to listen to mp3 files. Besides settings you can setup equalizer (there are predefined settings: Bass, Voice, Tremble, etc), as well as the ability to create your custom ones. The sound changes according to the settings, this is noticeable. The bundled player is totally identical to what we can find on first generation of Walkmans or in Sony Ericsson K750i.

Performance.
The model puts up nothing special in terms of performance for the handsets of the company’s latest generation, yet it does better than most of other offerings available on the market. Low screen resolution compared to senior models, has a positive impact on the K550i’s performance – the interface works at the light-speed. There are no caps on JAR files, while HEAP can make up from 512 Kb to 1.5 Mb in size.

Impressions
Despite the polyphony having 40 chords in the K550i, the handset does not provide a breakthrough in sounding of mp3 tunes compared to other Sony Ericsson branded phones. Volume-wise, performing on average level on this front, the K550i is pretty much akin to Sony Ericsson K790/K800/W810. Be sure you will hear the handset outdoors. The silent alert provides average strength. The reception part is on the same level with that of other products by the Sony Ericsson – in other words, it’s very fine.
Generally, the market holds a great many of models that try to be Sony Ericsson K750i-esque offerings and thus act as rivals to the K550i as well. At the same time we haven’t seen a device, from any of the market leaders, that would pack comparable quality of snaps, multitasking and good sonic experience in a casing this small. Some proposals trump the K550i in particular fields, but no other handset shows off all these features in one place. Hence the conclusion that Sony Ericsson K550i is destined to become a milestone, a successor to the K750i, that will shave much of its price off at the turn of 2007 – beginning of 2008. Sound strange, though, but this handset will become Sony Ericsson’s greatest profit generator in the mid range – there is already a great base for that existing.

Review of GSM\UMTS-smartphone Nokia N93i

Sales package:

Nokia N93i phone
Adobe Premiere Elements 3.0 PC software
Nokia Battery BL-5F, 950 mAh
Nokia Travel Charger AC-4
Nokia Wired Headset HS-23
Nokia Connectivity Cable CA-53
Nokia Video-out Connectivity Cable CA-64U
Nokia miniSD Card 1GB MU-24
Nokia Soft Pouch CP-83
Nokia Wrist Strap CP-130

Despite all the hype around Nokia N93, its users are techi guys alone, and moreover the sale rates are quite moderate. The problem was that an unsophisticated consumer is not yet ready to drag along a bulky device with him, even though it has Nokia engraved on it, shows off great video recording quality etc. So the goal set for the N93’s successor was not introducing some new features or software upgrade up to Feature Pack 1 – Nokia N93i presents us only with modifications that have something to do with its looks, specifically now we have something to choose from – grey or brick red trims. Both colors feature mirror-finished front panel, which is all the rage nowadays – just remember “emotional” products by Sony Ericsson, sporting just the same trinket, for example Sony Ericsson Z310i, Z610i. Naturally such surface gets soiled in no time, but your or whomever looks at it, eyes are going to be very pleased.

In pursuit of smaller size they had to shave off some of the handset’s battery life along with “spare” centimeters – the N93i carries onboard a 950 mAh Li-Ion battery (BL-5F), while its counterpart, Nokia N93 made use of the BP-6M capacious of 1100 mAh. But the difference in terms of overall lifetime figures won’t be too striking – previously the phone put up 2 days of operation and now it is 1.5-2 days – a thing that can be dealt with. And those power users among you should not worry – for you the N93i still have only one day. As the manufacturer claims the N93i can provide up to 3.9 hours of talk time and up to 275 hours of standby.

In the review on Nokia N93 your humble servant pointed at the 128x36-pixels color external screen being not a justified solution – the picture was bad at any rate, while reading from such display in the sun was a pain. Over at Nokia they have come to the same conclusion and put under the mirror plate a OLED screen sporting the same resolution and displaying up to 65 K colors, but the dominating tones are always monochrome pastel colors, which allows the phone to keep the picture in acceptable state in various environments and on top of that this color perfectly matches the mirror finish of the handset’s face. The display is topped by an indicator having a pair colors onboard – green or blue depending on active mode.

The internal QVGA-screen (240x320 pixels, TFT) is nothing new to the market, measuring 2.4” diagonally and being a standard for the current gen models. Capable of 16 mln colors the N93i is far superior to its brother-in-arms that could boast only 262 K. You don’t need to be a sophisticated person to note that quality-wise the display has improved much upon the previous model – the picture looks crisper and more color-saturated, whereas on Nokia N93 it looks as if it is washed out a bit – in real life the difference is more than striking, sample photos won’t give you a comprehensive idea of how great the improvement is.

Shots size taken with Nokia N93i is approximately 30 percent smaller due to altered image processing algorithm, yet it takes the same time to run. Nevertheless files come out smaller in size, details suffer, and colors get to be less natural. In terms of hardware the N93i’s camera module is the same as that found in Nokia N93, but software-wise there are two shoes of different color. To please tastes of an average consumer the manufacturer has also altered the settings. But to me, it is a totally wrong approach, and what is more, it is backed up with nothing. The resulting solution is clearly inferior to Sony Ericsson K790/K800, as the snaps quality provided by Nokia N93i is worse. If you are looking for a Nokia-branded product with a top-notch camera, then it comes down to a single option – Nokia N93. Nokia N95 is comparable, but it makes use of a non-optimal shots processing algorithm.

Impressions

It will make you laugh that Nokia N93i in fact has almost no improvements over the original Nokia N93, tiny win in dimensions aside. The ergonomics of the keypad is mediocre, as folding the phone open is quite challenging because the flip is too thin, the camera has gotten worse as well. With this comes an insight that this model is meant for the fashion-conscious audience alone, as well as its glass-finished facepanel, while the price is not the thing that matters. In all other ways the new handset makes no sense – the original Nokia N93 proves to be just better.

But for vast majority of consumers Nokia N93i as an option on their short-lists is not very interesting, since the market has Nokia N73 to offer, which shows off better still-image quality and worse video recording in a much more portable casing armed with stereo-speakers and some other fetching attractions.

Review of GSM-handset Samsung E250

Sales package:

Handset
800 mAh battery
User Guide
Charger
Stereo-headset

“City opens it mysteries… to those who can open them”
“Samsung is glad to offer a new range of sliders. We created three phones with different suites of features so as to allow everyone to choose a slider to his own liking”.
This is the prologue the official promo-site greets you with, which inaugurates a line of budget sliders: the X530, the E250 and the C300. It might sound surprising but the slogan above fully reveals the goal and the sense of these unsophisticated models release. Today we are taking a closer look at the second device in the range – Samsung E250.

The device sports a number of traits characterizing the senior offerings. For example, it can well be compared with the flagship of ultra-skinny sliders – Samsung D900. It is not about building particular design elements into the younger model - Samsung E250 is in fact an exact clone of the senior model, saving for a couple of difference in casing’s curves and the keys size. For an unsophisticated user it would be next to impossible to tell the difference between the two at a glance. All pros and cons of such approach have been discussed in our previous reviews so I won’t go over them again. I can only suggest you looking at the face-off of the two sliders. Samsung E250 is on the left and D900 is on the right.
